Encore
Harvard, MA
Project scope
I call this the encore house because I designed the original home and have designed two additions for it. The most recent addition also involved significant remodeling of the existing family room, kitchen, and mudroom. (840 sq. ft.)
Our charge
The recent challenge was to enlarge the kitchen, family room, breakfast room, and mudroom. These goals required a significant increase to the first floor footprint but the client did not want to modify any of the second floor rooms or block their windows.
Like a giant bottom drawer, the first floor rooms have been pulled out into the rear yard. A flat roof covers the extended family room and kitchen with triangular skylights over the kitchen. The breakfast room is to the side of the second floor windows so it has a pitched roof and cathedral ceiling, drawing light deep into the home’s interior.
